5Can't be beat for this price
By Kelly
Since this projector is new and there are no reviews yet... Just received this projector two days ago, so I don't know how it works long term, but it is working great right out of the box. The set up is not the most user friendly, but if you read the manual it can be figured out without too much effort. It comes with a composite, audio and VGA cables, but does not come with plenty of other cables and adapters that you may need to hook up the devices you need. I have a macbook and had to order a special cable just for that. Simply using a USB cord will not cut it. One kind of confusing thing is that the manual refers to an optional Ipod adapter and seems to imply that it is included with the projector. This adapter is not included. As for how the projector looks, it looks just awesome. We are in the process of making a big screen for it, but last night my husband pulled out an old white sheet to try out. Hanging the sheet flat on the wall, the picture from the projector was pretty darn good. The size of the projection was about 5-6 feet high and we were watching a TV show where singers get up on stage to sing. We felt like we were in the front row of the theater of a live performance. In a fairly dark room the picture looks exceptional. Not perfect, a very little bit fuzzy, but it is definitely 720p quality, and some of that fuzziness may have been because of the sheet. Turning the light on we could still easily see the projection. The colors don't pop and the whites don't shine when its light, but it is easily watchable. Just for kicks we pointed the projector around the room and happened to shine it on a cabinet that is painted black. You could still see the picture, even with lights on. According to my brother-in-law who works in the home theater business, the light from the LED projectors are not filtered through a color wheel like other projectors, maybe that has something to do with how nice and crisp the brightness and colors look.I did a lot of research on projectors and ultimately decided I could live with the lower lumens of the LED projector so I don't have to keep buying bulbs every other year. I had selected several possibilities, but when this one dipped to $499 I took the plunge with this. It was my first choice anyway. I liked this one best because it seemed to have a large selection of acceptable video formats, had plenty of choices for video cord that could be used, and had the largest luminage (is that a word?) of all the LED projectors I saw other than an Optoma with specs almost identical to the Acer (but slightly more expensive), and a Casio that was quite a bit more expensive and was getting some bad reviews.Right now the bulb is super bright and the clarity and available features are much better than I expected with a $500 projector. Whether this bulb dims over time, however, is something yet to be determined. I took my chances, and for now am very very happy. I can't wait to finish building the screen to see what this baby can really do, and my husband can't wait to watch a football game.**2 Month Update! 2/3/12**We've finished building the projector room and also built the screen using some big smooth wooden sheet my husband found at Home Depot, and a $30 quart of white paint from Sherwin Williams. I found an article on the web that said this paint was the best cheap paint to use for making your own screen. The colors are now incredible! Stunning really. To get really picky here, there is a slight kind of jerkiness to the flow of movement in a movie when things are moving fast, but I hardly notice it. We have hooked this thing up to our TV tuner (one of those cheap digital converters and an antenna is all you need), a DVD player, a Roku, my computer (with iTunes movies), a thumb drive with photos, and an SD card with videos. Everything works! We built a room for it in our unfinished basement (now partially finished), and we use this projector almost every day. So far, no signs of dimming or changes in the quality. In the light, it is easily watchable, and in the dark the colors and whites have a nice rich and shining quality.Just to clarify what others have written in their reviews and comments about the text not being clear. This does not seem to apply to subtitles in movies or for reading any of the menu items for adjusting the projector. Maybe this is a problem for computer text? For watching movies it is awesome. Reading subtitles is not a problem, and the lettering looks just as clear as everything else. However, if you are buying this projector for presentations, you may want to read and ask questions of some of the other reviews and comments for clarification on this issue. When I first suggested to my husband that we look into getting a projector, he was pretty skeptical, and thought we would do better to spend our money on a big screen TV (we still use our old analog TVs and digital converters). I talked him into this instead, and just yesterday he actually told me that he is so much more pleased with the projector than he would have been with a TV. He's looking forward to watching the Superbowl this weekend on the big screen.

5Good 500 clone
By Arielo "Hi-Jacked" Stanzoni
Apart for feeling screwed for getting this a few days ago for $600, I am otherwise happy with the unit.Small and lightweight, it takes little room in my standard size rolling computer case and comes with a convenient carrier.I had a chance to use both RGB (D-SUB) and HDMI and both work fine, however there is a short blackout before an HDMI source starts, nothing serious though.Pros:Light weight, good looksGood 9ft. diagonal image (dark room), 6ft. diagonal in a semi lit environment. No light leakage around the screen.Hardly discernible CA (color aberration) at 6ft. diagonal.Great color and brightness.Fan noise is noticeable but totally unnoticed when watching a movie.Connection options.Focus does not change when the unit heats up.Cons:Price I paid on Amazon. No instruction manual (provided on a DVD), but easy to use.I think there was a fingerprint on the lens when I turned it on the first time but when I got hold of special German lens wipes I couldn't see it with the unit off. Wiped it anyway.I realize there are some forums out there discussing this unit. My two cents: I always thought it would be nice to have a projector but the unit price and lens cost always put me off. I believe this (and similar) LED projectors are the first to present a valid alternative to large TVs. Go get one.

4Acer K330 vs Optoma ML500
By Daniel Luu
I bought this projector after I returned the Optoma ML500.The reason I returned the Optoma ML500 was because I had serious HDMI signal drop issues.I exchanged the Optoma 2 times, and all three had HDMI signal drop issues and one had a dead remote. You can find my review of the Optoma on its product page.Image QualityAcer K330 has diamond shaped pixels. Imagine regular pixels, turned 45 degrees. I am not too big a fan of this as it seems to create more of a window screen effect in my opinion. It also makes text harder to read. The Optoma ML500 has regular square pixels. so it looks better in my opinion.BrightnessI run the projectors on ECO mode, though I would probably be dead by the time they go out.The Optoma does look brighter from what I remember, but I do not have them side by side to actually compare.Sound QualityHonestly I can't really tell a different between the two projectors. They both have small speakers and do not sound that great anyways.FocusFocusing the Acer is a lot harder than the Optoma since the ring is so much smaller, and can have a lot of resistance when turning. Sometimes I feel like I am going to break it since I have to squeeze hard to even get a grip on it.Both projectors require minor re-focus after turning it on. If you are planning to mount this projector, then it would be a pain for you, but I use this as a portable projector so it is no big deal.Size and PortabilityThe Acer is slightly larger and heavier, but since they are already really small, it doesn't really matter. The bag that the Optoma comes with is smaller and more high quality though. Both do not require you to lug around a power brick. Just one of cables like the computer power cable will power them.Buttons/InputsThe Acer does have an audio out port (3.5mm) unlike the Optoma. This allows you to input audio through HDMI and output to other speakersThe Optoma has S-Video, but this should be extinct by now.Other than that, both projectors have the same inputs (VGA, USB-A,USB-B, SD, HDMI, Yellow RCA)The Acer remote seems to have slow response to the projector, like a full second. It also seems like the Acer remote is missing the volume up and down, since the up and down buttons don't do anything for me.The first Optoma I had actually felt like it had the same response time as the Acer. The second one I had was completely dead. The third one I had was excellent and was very responsive. The up and down buttons on the Acer projector itself is really hard to press as they are very small. There didn't seem to be any way to exit the menus on the Optoma projector other than waiting 5 seconds or using the remote, but maybe I missed something.Projecting wireless works pretty good on both devices. I could use the Optoma dongle with the Acer also, so I didn't have to spend any extra money. I got it for around $20-30 Amazon. The Acer uses their own PC software for you to connect to the projector. The Optoma uses MirrorOp, which is also used on computer to computer and mobile phones.Note that wireless projection requires your PC wireless connection, so if you connect to the internet on wireless, you will lose internet unless you have another wireless card or connected by ethernet.Noise LevelThe Acer sounds more quiet in my opinion.Note that noise level will change depending on ECO and color profile for both projectors.Menu OptionsMaybe I am blind or something, but I cannot find the lamp hours on the Acer. You can set a duration for the Optoma to automatically shut down, and this option is not available on the Acer. The downside to this option is that it does not prompt you before it turns off. Both projectors have an option to turn off the projector after some duration where there is no input. On the Acer, it does not automatically switch to other inputs to check for connections, whereas the Optoma does. This is more of a preference thing. The Optoma however has a workaround. In the Optoma menu, you can select what input are enabled. There is no such option on the Acer.Throw RatioBoth projectors have 1.4:1 throw ratios.PriceUnfortunately the Acer K330 just keeps dropping in price since I bought it.It is $449.99 on another website and $489.00 on amazon. I paid $507.The Optoma ML500 is currently $523.99ConclusionI would much prefer the Optoma ML500 projector over the Acer K330, but after three exchanges for HDMI signal drop issues, I am getting tired, and I'm sure it is also costing Amazon. I have been using K330 the whole day without a single HDMI signal drop(knock on wood). I don't know if it was just my luck, or all ML500 have this flaw. If you do not use HDMI, I would say go for the ML500. If you use HDMI and you don't want stress, get the K330. When HDMI signal drops, your screen goes blank, and it takes 5-10 seconds to reconnect, which is not acceptable especially for gaming.

Dell M410HD DLP Projector

Product Description

Mobile presenters dream of light, bright, inexpensive, high resolution projectors. Dell's new M410HD is the thing dreams are made of. At 2.6 pounds and 2,000 lumens, it is almost in a class by itself, but when you add its 1280 x 800 native resolution , it stands alone among mobile projectors. If you happen to be a movie buff, you will appreciate that 720p video needs no scaling to fit the M410HD's 16 x 10 display. Like any projector, it has a few limitations, but overall, this is an excellent choice for the road warrior looking for a compact powerhouse of a projector.

4Good Value!

This projector is light-weight, and simple to use. One drawback is that the remote control button labels are really tough to see even under good lighting.

5Best price/performance of any home theater projector for 2D
By Steven W. Calvert
With 1080P/24 support and 50,000:1 Native Contrast Ratio this is simply the best projector available for the price for 2D blu-ray and other 2D HD content. Other projectors, for the most part, use a dynamic iris to achieve their stated contrast ratio, this one does not. A dynamic iris increases overall brightness in light scenes and decreases it in dark scenes leading to a lack of shadow detail in scenes with both light and dark areas and the brightness changes may be noticeably distracting. This projector doesn't use such tricks and therefore can provide awesome detail in dark and light areas at the same time. 3D content looks pretty good but may have some ghosting issues on certain content. If you are looking for a home theater projector for primarily 2D content with occasional 3D you really can't go wrong with this projector.

5Totally awesome, but needs better frame creation
By Widget Meister
My upgrade from PT-AE4000U to a DLA-RS45 (DLA-X30)Finally was able to afford a JVC projector, always wanted one for it's acclaimed black level and WOW, the black level and contrast! Like watching a CRT again! It's been a couple years since I gave up the CRT projector and I forgot how much better contrast and black levels could be. Dark movies look so much better, my back lit remote can be blinding ;-DPROS- WOW, the black level and contrast! Wow, first movie I watched, a dark scene there was a lamp in the room, it really looked like the lamp was in my theater ;-D- HDMI Autolipsync appears to work to some degree, even though I was specifically told by a JVC this it was not supported. The projector EDID reports 119ms video delay for (p) and 137ms for (i).- video delay does not vary (much) JVC told me the projector had a 3 frame delay. Not sure what that means with i,24p or 60p,CMD, etc.. I'm guessing the EDID values are an average. The 4000's video delay changed all over the place with different video types and was a MAJOR pain. Using 60P video I did read 110-120ms of delay with CMD off or any mode 1-4, so at least it's mostly the same unlike the 4000 which varies all over the place.- I like the menu system more and GUI tells you the frame rate when you change source.- Quiet, In normal mode, JVC was half as loud to the point that I could not hear it at all in the the room, when in high mode(3D) it was equal in sound level as the Panasonic in normal mode.- Brightness good. Measurement with a cheapo lux meter PT-AE4000U 158lux with new bulb in normal mode. DLA-RS45 130lux normal mode, 182lux in high power mode (3D). So it's a little dimmer in normal use but bright in high mode.CONS- Whoa, the frame creation needs some help! My 2 year old Panasonic really is a lot better. Unlike a lot of people out there I REALLY like frame creation, was waiting for it for years before it came out. Why in the world people think that 24hz is good I have know idea, they came up with that minimal frame rate almost 100 years ago! Mode 3 on the PT-AE4000U was awesome, smooth and artifact free. All the modes on the JVC seem worthless except Mode 3 which is about like mode 1 on the Panasonic. Mode 4 on the JVC looks promising but is covered in artifacts and unusable. There is no excuse for this other than a lack of processing power or BAD algorithms. The projector can do 120hz video, if it would only accept that rate input maybe external frame creation could be done, otherwise will be waiting for a new model...- 3D cool but not that exciting. NO CMD in 3D mode!, some flicker, some ghosting. I never used 3D before so I can't compare, don't think I'll use it much. I got the new PK-AG2's and also a set of the Monstervison/Optoma's. The JVC's were of a higher quality all around, did not require fiddling with settings and produced a slightly better stereo effect, but had a smaller window, slightly yellowed color and it's IR system made all my other remotes flaky when in 3D mode. The Monstervison/Optoma's are 1/2 the price, produce a slight buzz if you listen for it, I had to update the firmware and mess with a PC to get it working best, bigger view and better color, light reflects off your face and easily noticed, not see in the JVC's. Its a very hard call which set to keep.- Warm up period is substantially longer, also no option to remove blanking as it warms up.- a couple GUI glitches like when you switch video modes often the message gets stuck and you have to press the button again, also when you press color space it immediately changes to the next one instead of showing current, unlike other settings...- Made in China, not Japan. Same with the glasses.- bigger had to get a bigger shelf, makes my Panasonic look puny, but I'm use to 180lb projectors so no big deal.- Fixed video delay is great for movies and tv but the 120ms of delay is a lot for gaming and there is no way to make it less.I was excited about 3D but considered it a bonus, and after using a fair amount think less of it..not that exciting.. Also I thought the frame creation would be a least as good, but I was wrong, so as usual still looking for something even better.... I really bought the projector primarily for the black level and contrast, got that, so overall I'm happy.

52D or 3D WOW!!
By TJ
This projector does not disappoint! Unbelievable color right out of the box. Sharpness is good. Easy to view the screen from any angle. The ability to convert live TV or any signal for that matter to 3D is just wonderful. The 3D on this just pops! the 3D glasses easily go over regular eye glasses as well. The only draw back is with so many adjustments available it can be hard to find the one you need. That said the changes are easily made once found.

4Qumi feedback for iPad users
By LA
My notes and observations here are specifically for people who are especially interested in the experience of using the Qumi Q2 with the iPad. I have both good things to say and things to watch out for.First let me state that I have only tested out the Qumi with the iPad 2 and not the first generation iPad (though I am guessing the experience would be comparable). I wasn't originally sure if the Qumi would be a good fit for the iPad and I was a little hesitant to make the purchase. For iPad users like myself it appears worthwhile.Projecting the iPad screen through the Qumi works well. The projection is absolutely crisp. For 300 Lumens the image is pleasantly bright for such a small projector. While you can easily see the projected image in a room with reading level ambient light, if you are going to watch a full length movie with the screen diagonal being something like 100 inches, it is definitely preferable to view the movie in a darkened room. In a darken room, the colors are absolutely vivid and vibrant. When I first watched a movie with the Qumi, I was a little dismayed that the colors were off (tan colored skin tones appeared unnaturally red). Only after watching the movie did I find that Qumi 2 allows for adjusting color and other settings such as keystone correction. The Qumi 2 has a number of preset options for color correction. This can be found under IMAGE --> DISPLAY MODE. I found that when I set the display mode to BRIGHT, the color tones in the projection almost perfectly matched the iPad screen. The second closest match for color was when the display mode was set to sRGB.On the issue of the focusing mechanism for the Qumi I read a lot of reviews being critical about this. My impression is that in the Qumi Q2 the issue is overrated. I found that the focus mechanism on the side of the Qumi to be perfectly adequate. Many reviewers say that unit goes out of focus quickly (because of thermal expansion) and doesn't stabilize until the unit has been on a while. I did not notice this to be an issue at all. The unit I have is a Qumi "Q2" and I am suspecting it is a second generation product. In any case, I found that i did not have to play around with the focusing once I set it. Also, I found the projected image to be equally sharp on the center and the edges. Having said all these positive things about the focus, I do have a couple of issues. To focus the projected image you have to rotate a focus ring. This makes it hard to nail the sharpest possible image. A tiny nudge up or down on the ring and the image is still reasonably sharp. You don't quite know if the image is as crisp as it can be. My suggestion for the manufacturer (maybe it's included but I haven't found it yet) is that in the settings there should be some visual test pattern that makes it easy to discern when the focus is spot on.The Qumi has several cables. I've only used the HDMI connector cable. There appears to be one for VGA and this "should" work with your iPad if you have the VGA adapter for the iPad. Because VGA is analog, I would not expect the image to be as sharp as it is through the HDMI connector. I have used the VGA adapter for the iPad with other LCD projectors and have been very happy with it, save one exception... if you want to watch movies downloaded to the iPad from the iTunes Store and project it, you are out of luck. A stupid DRM (Digital Rights Management) mechanism senses you are using a non-HDMI device and won't let the movie play. I say this is stupid, because you can download the same movie from the iTunes Store to your laptop, use a VGA connector and a plain old LCD projector to watch the movie. I was worried that the same DRM mechanism would interfere with watching movies using the Qumi in conjunction with the iPad. Fortunately it is not an issue. Let me be explicit... If you have the iPad 2, purchase the Apple Digital AV Adapter (Model No. A1388 which has a list price of $39), and connect it through the HDMI cable that comes with the Qumi Q2, you will have no trouble watching movies downloaded to the iPad from iTunes, and view it in High Definition with a full 1080p resolution. Now that you are happy about all this I have to let you know about a wrinke (which has nothing to do with the Qumi itself)... for some reason whenever I download a movie from the iTunes Store it seems to take forever for the movie to be downloaded (something like a couple of hours -- by comparison, it takes maybe 10 or 20 minutes to download a typical movie over the same network from my laptop). I don't know why downloading to the iPad is so sluggish. My advice is if you want to want to watch movies using the Qumi as the projector and want to use the iPad instead of your laptop to hold the movie, you'd be well advised to do the downloading several hours in advance.Regarding cables with the Qumi, they are a bit short. I wish they could be longer, but I did not find it to be an overriding problem. Interestingly enough, the Qumi comes with a pair of magnetic sheaths or isolators to attach to the ends of the cable. These limit electromagnetic interference. It's nice that they include it. But they only provide one pair (one for each end of the cable). On a more expensive cable these magnetic isolators would be built into the cable. I view this as a cost cutting measure. It's not a problem, it's just something to be aware of. As far as practical issues are concerned (on the topic of cables), the Apple Digital AV Adapter detaches to easily from the iPad (this is an Apple/iPad issue, not a Qumi issue). The slightest little jiggle, and the digital signal to the Qumi breaks and entirely disrupts the movie watching. So care must be taken to make sure that the iPad and it's adapter are not disturbed during movie watching. After posting this review, another reviewer [Thanks Ticlar!] pointed out that the Qumi does have a tripod thread mount. Removing the tiny square sticker on the bottom of the unit reveals the tripod mount. :-)When watching long running movies with the Qumi/iPad there can be issue that the iPad goes into a power save mode. The power save mode is when the iPad screen shuts off to conserve power after a certain amount of inactivity. Normally it is awakened if you do anything like tap the screen. When watching movies, the iPad can go into this power save mode (the timeout is based on your iPad settings which you can easily configure). This power save mode doesn't interfere with the movie projected by the Qumi. It continues to play even as the iPad enters the power save mode. When you want to pause the movie you would tap the Pause button on the iPad screen. When the iPad enters power save mode while watching the movie, it's screen goes blank and no amount of tapping the iPad screen wakes it up. My advice is that before watching your movie, change the iPad's power management settings (i believe this is in the General --> Auto-Lock timeout) so that timeout is set to Never. You can always change it back to your original settings after watching the movie. One more comment about the Apple AV Digital Adapter... while you are using it to project your iPad screen on the Qumi, it's dual connector lets you simultaneously keep the iPad powered, so the batteries on the iPAd don't run down. My personal opinion is that powering it in this way adds one too many cables (but at least you are given options).I should say a couple of more things about the Qumi. The top of the Qumi has touch controls for accessing the Qumi's menu options. Additionally, the Qumi comes with an (infrared) remote control. But in a darkened room it is very difficult to read and click the correct buttons on the remote control even though the buttons are slightly raised. The Qumi comes with a nice little travel pouch. The travel pouch only accommodates the Qumi unit itself. There is really no room for the full complement of cables, let alone the separate A/C adapter. The Qumi Q2 does appear to be a solid quality product. I would not characterize it as very rugged. I think they cut corners to keep the price down (like the clip on magnetic sheaths, anemic built-in speakers, and poor documentation) but didn't drop the ball on important features. Please understand that I have restricted this review to iPad users who are unsure if the Qumi Q2 plays nicely with the iPad. To address this it was necessary to take into account how the two are used together, and identify some of the gotchas along the way.Bottom line: The Qumi Q2 does deliver near private theater quality viewing but be prepared for some initial fidgeting/configuring to make it work well. In this context I can safely say that I am satisfied with the purchase of the Qumi Q2 and would recommend it.

3Great Little Projector with a major flaw
By M. Huynh
Let's just say I have own an Optoma HD65, due to the lamp and power outages around here, I've opted for an LG HX300(G). I was able to live with it fine and dandy but wanted something around 720p instead of 1080p. I don't need 1080p to live since most of the stuff I watch are from Netflix or YouTube. 720p is enough for HD quality and everything else that I do.Then I researched for more LED projectors and ran into LG HW300 and Qumi Q2. To be honest I would've gone with the LG HW300 for the DLNA so I could stream videos/musics easier without bunch of cables around my room and in my closet. As for the Qumi Q2, the 300 lumens is enough for me. I can live with it since the LG HX300 is about the same but I would have to say the Q2 is slightly brighter. My only major gripe is having to buy adapters for my HDMI cable and component (still need to find an adapter for it). No accessories/adapters for other video inputs (for example the Wii). The menu is really really basic. Can't calibrate much at all. Cannot change R, G, B to suit the situation. The presettings were ok. Brightness was way too saturated but not too bad for me.Now for the good stuff, pixels are much more less noticeable when compared to the LG HW300, thanks to the increase pixels. Videos played nicely no stutter, no rainbow effect that I could notice, and the fan was not too bad (bad during silent scenes).**One little trouble, I had a defective one prior to this review. The red led was broken or something because Mario's red under clothing was pure black. So did other images and videos where red didn't show up. Amazon was willing to replace it without any hassle. Thank you Amazon. Vivitek took awhile to respond but I took up on Amazon's offer because they were much more speedier in their replies.Overall though, I am pleased with the product.Update- After using it for like 2 weeks. I'm actually getting quite frustrated with the projector. It appears that after shutting off the projector and turning it back on later, you are required to refocus again. If you are using it as a dedicated theater and mounted on the ceiling, you literally have to climb up every time, turn the focus wheel and not turn it off ever again. That's very inconvenient and a major flaw for me. I wish Vivitek would address something on this issue other than telling us to just refocus when it reaches operational temperature.Update 8/27/11- I'm beginning to notice the projector is not focused in some areas strangely enough. Like along the bottom right portion of the screen is blurred out and middle left. Apparently it's a common problem. Please buy at your own discretion. Dropped it to 3 stars.
